Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028.
According to Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the decision reflects a broader shift in consumer behaviour and the wider entertainment industry, where digital formats are increasingly preferred over physical media.
After January 2028, new PlayStation titles will be released exclusively in digital format via the PlayStation Store and through participating retailers offering digital versions. Sony clarified that this change will not affect games that have already been released or those scheduled to launch on disc before the transition date.
The company described the move as a natural evolution in response to how players access and purchase games today. It said the transition allows it to better align with current consumer preferences, where digital downloads now significantly outweigh physical disc purchases.
Sony also stated that it will continue investing in improving how players access games, aiming to offer more flexibility in how and where games are purchased, whether through retail channels or the PlayStation Store. The company emphasized that it remains committed to delivering a consistent gaming experience and thanked players for their continued support as it moves toward a fully digital future for new releases.
